Questions about Kaftans & Jalabiyas
What is the difference between a kaftan and a jalabiya?
A kaftan is a loose, wide robe, often with wide sleeves, sized simply as S/M or L/XL. A jalabiya is a more fitted long dress, often embellished at the neckline, and is sized by length like an abaya, from 52 to 60 inches. Both suit Ramadan evenings and gatherings at home.
Which kaftan is best for the beach or a pool day?
Choose a cotton lounge kaftan: it is light, breathable and easy to wash after sand and salt water. Silk-touch kaftans are better kept for gatherings, as they mark more easily. Check the fabric on each product page. Pair it with a modal hijab, which stays in place in the breeze without pins.
Do you have Ramadan kaftans?
Yes. Our printed Ramadan kaftans are designed for iftar, suhoor and evening visits, and they appear in the collection ahead of the month. Because stock is live, the department page always shows what is available in each size and store at that moment.
Can a kaftan be shortened?
Often, yes, depending on the hem. Plain-hemmed kaftans can be shortened in store in 2–3 days; kaftans with an embroidered or printed border at the hem may not, as the border would be lost. Ask the team in store before buying if you are under 155 cm.
Are embellished jalabiyas hand-wash only?
Most embellished jalabiyas should be hand washed cold or dry cleaned, because beading and embroidery can catch in a machine. Turn the piece inside out and do not wring it. The care instructions for each jalabiya are on its product page.
Is a kaftan suitable for pregnancy?
Many of our kaftans work well through pregnancy because of their loose, generous cut. The L/XL size gives the most room, with a bust up to 112 cm. Choose cotton or silk-touch fabrics that do not cling, and check the product description for the cut.
